In Ms. Washington's 4th-grade classes, students are bringing their favorite stories to life — one pumpkin at a time! For their Book Character Pumpkin Project, students chose a beloved book and decorated a pumpkin to look like their favorite character.

Students use paint, paper, and plenty of imagination to transform pumpkins into literary masterpieces. Alongside their pumpkin, each student wrote a brief report about the book and character they chose.

This fun fall activity celebrates reading, creativity, and self-expression. Here's a look at a few of our submissions. Our hallway pumpkin patch is nearly full! 🍂✨

During the month of October, the walls outside the WCPES media center have been filling up with book character pumpkins and scary stories.
Students in Pre-K-2nd grade were given the opportunity to disguise a paper or artificial pumpkin as a book character, so that it doesn't get carved, of course!
3rd-5th grades had the opportunity to write a two-sentence scary story. Participation has been great!
As classes come to the media center this week, students are voting on their favorite pumpkin or scary story. The top three pumpkin and story winners will be announced Friday, October 31st, and will receive a candy bag.

🦴 Fossil Fun in Third Grade! 🦕
Mrs. Harless’ class has been learning all about fossils! After listening to a read-aloud of Digging Up Dinosaurs by our media specialist, Mrs. Fowler, students got to become fossil hunters themselves — carefully “excavating” chocolate chips from cookies just like real paleontologists. What a fun and tasty way to bring learning to life! 🍪🔍

One of our students got to be the teacher in Mrs. Council and Ms. Dupree's class! She led the class in a review of the story “Say Hello,” asked her classmates what letters were in the title, and even helped introduce our new letters of the week — S and H! We love seeing our students take the lead and shine with confidence! 💫📚✨

Mrs. Griffin’s Fifth grade ELA students were tasked with creating 3 products to show what they have learned from mentor texts read during Unit 1. Our original choices grew exponentially as students became inspired by each other’s ideas and creativity. Students created visual representations to show what they have learned about theme and character growth through conflict, including posters, slide show presentations, video games, poems, raps, interactive games and displays. This work is displayed in the hallway and is teaching others about the stories we have read, as well as the connections students have made. Among the texts read are: Turning Pages, Because, Say Something, The Cat Man of Aleppo, The Tragic Tale of the Great Auk, Look Both Ways, and the Water Dance.
